What is counselling?
Counselling offers an opportunity to think and talk about your concerns, through dialogue with a trained counsellor. In time this exploration may help you develop an increased knowledge of yourself whilst helping you to locate appropriate coping mechanisms and possible changes in your behaviour. The Counselling Service is here to help you to look at problems of a personal and emotional nature so that you can begin to explore your alternatives.
Life can be difficult at times and may well highlight or produce problems which might not otherwise appear. Counselling gives you space and time to explore issues that are important to you.
How can counselling help?
Counselling helps in two main ways. It provides a unique opportunity for people to speak in confidence with an objective person outside of their day-to-day environment, who give their undivided attention to whatever is troubling them. Furthermore, a counsellor is trained to be receptive to what is going on and to know when and how to ask the right questions. The combined experience of really being listened to, together with the gradual gaining of new insight into their difficulties, provides people with an opportunity to approach things in a different way.
Counselling does not involve giving direct advice as a counsellor is trained to help you arrive at your own informed decisions and find your own answers. Furthermore, a counsellor cannot make you feel better. Ultimately, one of the aims of counselling is to help you become more fulfilled, either within yourself or in certain aspects of your life. This will mean different things for different people and part of my role as a counsellor is to help you make sense of your particular issue and the personal meaning you place on this and to help you find new options in the way you relate to yourself, other people or situations. It is co-operative process, in which both client and counsellor work together to find more fulfilment for you as the client.
How is counselling structured?
An initial assessment session to talk over your difficulties is offered as quickly as possible and can be done by telephone, email or face to face. Each counselling session lasts for 50 minutes. We will arrange counselling to begin as quickly as possible after your assessment. In very busy periods a short waiting list may operate. We will always try to minimise the impact this has on you. Arrangements can be made for longer term counselling when appropriate with agreement from the counsellor.
Counselling is normally with individuals but sometimes couples, families or small groups of friends find it helpful to talk over a difficult issue with a counsellor.
Is everything confidential?
All counselling at Counselling Care Services is given in the strictest confidence and ordinarily nothing will be divulged to anyone outside the Service without your written permission. Rare exceptions to this will be explained to you by your counsellor in the initial session, and in the leaflet given to you when you register with the Service.
The general information we ask you about is known as personal data and information collated is securely stored in line with the Data Protection Act 1998. Information about your health, medical history and any treatment you have received in known as sensitive personal data and securely stored in line with the Data Protection Act 1998.
You may view and have copies of all information kept upon written request and will be supplied within five working days of receipt of the request
Do the counsellors work to any ethical guidelines?
Yes, counsellor's work to the standards set the in Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). This is a national document written and produced by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. For full information (BACP).
What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is a scientifically verified and effective technique that can promote accelerated human change. With hypnosis, we can create desired changes in behaviour and encourage mental and physical well being.
How does hypnosis feel?
Since hypnosis is a natural state of mind, clients are often surprised that they hear every word. Unless one enters a deeper state you may not feel any different than when relaxing in a favourite chair reading a good book or engrossed in a good film.
Does the hypnotised person give up control?
No. When you are in a hypnotic state you are in complete control of all your normal faculties and would never do or say anything that you wouldn’t ordinarily be prepared to do
How will I feel directly after hypnosis?
Great! Relaxed, rejuvenated, cool and calm, reenergised and ready to meet the demands of the day.
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Yes, however some people find it easier than others to achieve a deep level of hypnosis.
Will I be asleep?
No. Some people describe being in hypnosis as similar to that very pleasant half way stage we enter just before falling asleep: a state of utter and complete peace and relaxation.
Will I be aware of what's happening?
Yes. You will be totally aware of everything that's going on.
Can I be made to say or do anything I don't want to?
No. You are totally in control of yourself while in hypnosis.
How would I know if I have been hypnotised?
If you have felt relaxed and you have listened to the hypnotherapist’s suggestions, you have been hypnotised. Some people who reach a deeper level of hypnosis describe other feelings or sensations including: not hearing the hypnotherapist’s voice, heaviness in their body, time distortion where they feel the session only lasted a few minutes. All these feelings or sensations cease once the hypnosis has ended.
Do you guarantee success?
Sadly not, however at the outset we agree clearly defined goals and discuss the chances of success. Our approach proves remarkably effective with most clients if you come to us with areal determination to succeed, you’ll have an excellent chance of achieving you goal.
How many sessions might I need?
That depends on the issue, or issues you wish to work on. Smoking cessation takes one session only; however for most clients we see, we expect between two or three sessions dependant on the severity of the problem.
Does the effect last?
Changes made to your fundamental belief system will last forever. Suggestion therapy may be just a 'sticking plaster' unless there is full co-operation between therapist and client.
How will I be hypnotised?
Simply by speaking to you calmly, quietly and slowly, Adrian will help you enter into such a deep and pleasant state of relaxation that your subconscious mind will be ready to accept suggestions for beneficial change.
Will I give away secrets under hypnosis?
No. You will retain complete control over your thought processes.
Is Hypnosis good for improving performance?
Yes. It's the best form of therapy for improvement in all areas of life including:
Career, Sport, Examinations, Memory and concentration, Driving, Public speaking and presentation skills, Stage performance are only a few areas than can be improved
How do I book a session?
It is easy to book with us. You can telephone or email us. It is helpful to have an idea of a couple of days and times that may suit you and also a couple of preferred locations. That way it makes it easier to meet your requirements. Further sessions are simply booked with your counsellor.
If you are unable to keep an appointment we ask that you give a minimum of 24 hours notice.
If you arrive late your appointment would start away and finish at the allotted time unless agreed otherwise with the counsellor.
